Stress Related Illnesses

Stress is the single most causative agent for many illnesses especially when stress goes on for so long to reach chronic levels. At this point, it may diversify into different forms of illnesses. There are certain signs that experts can confirm to be due to stress and timely detection is therefore imperative.

Examples of stress related illnesses.

  1. Cardiovascular disease

Stress will often lead to an increase in the heart rate of an individual. Consequently, this will transform into an elevated blood pressure. In as much as this may be okay if it is just for a short period, being continually in this state has a strenuous effect on the heart as well as other organs.. For this reason, there is a direct link between individuals dealing with progressive stress and the tendency to develop complications in their circulatory system such as stroke or heart attack.

The immune system of the body reacts to the skin inflammation by starting an attack against healthy tissues, an element that translates to rheumatoid arthritis or ulcerative colitis.

  1. Insomnia and sleep problems

Insomnia is a medical condition that happens as a result of a psychological condition. It is a severe and long term problem; stress has the potential to cause sleep problems and consequently, lack of sleep will cause even more stress, leading to an unending cycle that will become worse with time if medical attention is not sought.

  1. Headaches

Stress can cause persisting and unending headaches mostly because of feeling under stress, an element that tenses up the muscles of the body. Prolonged tension leads to pain as well as muscle stiffness and thus headaches. For this reason, stress related headaches are termed tension headaches.

  1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

This is also due to the body’s immune system’s response to the high levels of activity and therefore rages an attack on the different parts if the body. Stress will often interfere and corrupt the normal functioning of the digestive system. An individual who is stress will often eat while in action, giving the digestive system little or no time to operate. It is also common that such an individual will skip meals. The body’s response to such abnormalities is either constipation or diarrhea due to anxiety.


Stress related illnesses can develop into very serious health conditions if medical attention is not sought in good time. In the event that the stress levels are not so far gone, it may be very easy to reverse the effects with the help of a medical expert. Alternatively, finding ways to manage the stress will often suffice but then this applies only if the stress levels have not developed into levels that actually cause health damage. It has been witnessed that stress has been the driving force behind different forms of crime, include harm inflicted on oneself.
